Car thieves stole a Range Rover in an exclusive Cherry Hills Village neighborhood and later rammed a police car during a wild chase through several south metro area cities, authorities say.

Two men were recorded at 6:22 a.m. Monday on a surveillance camera at a Cherry Hills Village mansion arriving in a stolen Ford F150 pickup truck and entering a private gate, said Lt. Pat Whitman of the city’s police department.

The camera captured the thieves taking items from four vehicles parked in the driveway and then driving away in the white 2006 Range Rover, Whitman said. The keys to the SUV had been left inside, she said.

Police spotted the stolen car elsewhere in Cherry Hills Village this morning, apparently being used for prowling cars, Whitman said. A chase followed, and the suspects drove the SUV into a police car, damaging the front end but not injuring the officer.

The chase was called off because it became too dangerous, Whitman said.

Englewood police then started chasing the stolen SUV, which ran a red light at the intersection of Broadway and Quincy Avenue. Minutes later, Jefferson County sheriff’s deputies received reports of the SUV driving on sidewalks, Whitman said.

Colorado State Patrol officers followed the Range Rover for a short time on C-470 but called off the chase when it became too dangerous, she said. The SUV was forcing other cars off the road.

The suspects and the stolen car remained at large late today. The Range Rover has a custom grill with the initial S on it. It also has custom tires and rims.
