OK, so the streets were a little icy last week and the election could have gone better, but John Hickenlooper is still one of the 10 best mayors in the world.
At least that’s according to World Mayor magazine, which this week named Denver’s top official the ninth- best mayor on the planet in ranking their top 10.
World Mayor was able to assess that Hickenlooper’s accomplishments clearly set him above 10th-ranked Patrick Ramiaramanana of Antananarivo, Madagascar. But Dubravka Suica, Mayor of Dubrovnik, Croatia, edged him out of eighth place primarily by “restoring her city to one of the world’s premier tourist destinations after the devastating Balkan war.”
Hickenlooper may not have brought Denver back from war, but World Mayor reports a supporter said he has “done wonders for lifting Denver’s reputation on a national and international level.”
Hickenlooper is no stranger to accolades. In 2005, Governing Magazine called him one of the top Public Officials of the Year, and Time named him one of the top five “big city” mayors in the U.S. “Recognition,” said spokeswoman Lindy Eichenbaum Lent, “whether it is at the neighborhood level or global in scope – is always flattering.” World Mayor chose one American above Hickenlooper: Stephen Reed, of Harrisburg, Pa., was third.
