The Nugget’s bench-clearing meltdown with the New York Knicks Saturday night is just one of a litany of Denver-connected moments from the sports world’s lowlight reels.
Maxim magazine this month features a story on the 20 Greatest Sports Meltdowns – and we have bragging rights for the most incidents of any city – three. That’s 15 percent of them all.
No. 20 is the fight between Colorado Avalanche and the Detroit Red Wings in 1997 – with a 10-minute brawl that featured a goalie fight! No. 7 is the Aug. 9, 2006 meltdown arrest of here-for-a-moment Broncos RB Maurice Clarett in Ohio after a car chase. After subduing Clarett with Mace and a Taser, cops found in his car an “assault rife, three handguns, a bottle of vodka, and a CD of children’s songs recorded by Ohio state prisoners.”
Bill Romanowski’s Aug. 24, 2003 attack on Marcus Williams comes in No. 2. Romo punched teammate Williams and crushed his eye socket. No. 1, of course, is Mike Tyson’s ear biting incident. We have nothing to do with that.
Sutra
The patio is gone in front of the old Donkey Den at East 11th Avenue and Lincoln Street to make room for Sutra, a nightclub opening Dec. 29. It’s from the Tryst people with the slogan “Sleep is for Sundays.” It’ll be open 8 p.m.-2 a.m. Thursdays-Saturdays (that’s 18 hours-a-week!), with 12 bottle service areas, private bathrooms, “bed areas,” a DJ, drummer and stage & bar dancers.
