Two vehicles flew 30 to 40 feet off a bridge this morning at Interstate 25 and E-470, killing one of the two drivers.

Broomfield police said the vehicles were northbound on I-25 around 7:15 a.m., when they went off the overpass and fell about 40 feet into the drainage area.

One car, a Volkswagen Jetta, landed upside down, instantly killing the driver, a 29-year-old woman from Golden, police said.

The other car, a Subaru, landed on its front-end and came to rest upright. The driver, 20-year-old woman from Ft. Collins, was taken to St. Anthony’s Central Hospital in Denver, suffering from non-life-threatening injuries, authorities said. There were no passengers in either car, police said.

Police have not determined the cause of the accident, whether the two cars collided or merely slipped on the icy roadway.

The accident closed I-25 for several hours, but the highway has since been reopened.
