Two cats who survived a Colorado Springs apartment fire nearly two weeks ago were rescued Sunday with the help of cat food and whipped cream.
The cats lived on the third floor of the Castle West Apartments, which burned Jan. 16 in what has been ruled an arson. Their owners were unable to grab them before fleeing the flames.
Firefighters said conditions were too unstable for them to enter the building to reach the cats after the fire, and animal welfare officers couldn’t enter because the site was a crime scene.
Firefighters who spotted the pets after the fire were unable to grab them.
Colorado Springs Utilities on Sunday offered two boom trucks to reach the windows of the apartment where the cats were last seen, allowing the scene to be left untouched, firefighters said.
The animals’ owner rode in one boom and coaxed two of the cats to the window with cat food and their favored treat of whip cream.
Traps were left to retrieve the third cat.
