An elderly man driving at high speeds south on Sheridan Boulevard near 20th Avenue collided with four other cars, sending five people to hospitals this morning, Denver police said.

Just after 11 a.m., a 79-year-old man swerved in his Mercury Sable onto oncoming traffic and collided with a Dodge minivan.

The Mercury went airborne and crashed into a Toyota Rav4 SUV, then hit a Ford Thunderbird and finally came to rest up against a Dodge pickup.

Three people from the Rav4, the Thunderbird and the pickup were taken to Saint Anthony’s Central Hospital for treatment of unspecified injuries, police said.

The driver of the Mercury and the driver of the Dodge minivan were transported to Denver Health Medical Center with serious injuries, police said.

Spokeswoman Virginia Quinones said investigators are trying to determine why the elderly man was driving so fast. No charges have been filed. No patient conditions have been released.
