A 24-year-old Denver woman was charged Wednesday with three counts of attempted murder after allegedly trying to drown her three children, according to the Denver district attorney’s office.

Brenda Hernandez told her sister she wanted to die, then undressed herself and the children and was attempting to drown one when police intervened, court records show.

The incident took place Saturday at an apartment in the 3100 block of West Mexico Avenue.

Court records said Hernandez’s 7-year-old son was trying to pull her off one of the children before officers intervened.

The other two children are girls, ages 2 and 3, authorities said.

“All three kids were in the bathroom, they were all undressed, and they all, at some point, had been in the tub,” said DA spokeswoman Lynn Kimbrough. “When officers knocked on the door, there was no answer. They kept knocking. Finally someone said, ‘There’s no one home. There is no one here. Go away.”‘

Hernandez’s sister had called police and asked them to do a welfare check at the home after she heard about the death wish, court records show.

She could not be reached for comment.

Hernandez was booked into Denver jail on $150,000 bail.

She is expected to appear in court Friday for formal advisement of charges.

Hernandez’s children were taken by social services, authorities said.
