While the horses will be galloping down Harrison Avenue in downtown Leadville this weekend as part of the historic Crystal Carnival, the dogs will be mushing a few miles away at the 12th annual Mount Massive Mush. For a twist on the classic horse-pulling skiers, check out the dogsled and dogs-pulling-skiers races Saturday at Leadville’s Mount Massive Golf Course. The dual starts in both contests mirror a drag-racing start, as the leashed hounds sprint with tongue-wagging abandon. Racers on sleds and skis can reach 20 mph as the dogs reach full speed. Spectators can watch from the golf course’s clubhouse or alongside the county road. Brats and beer round out the party, which gets going before noon. After the races, there’s a free skijoring clinic for skiers who want to find some fun in their dog’s futile feud with the leash.
