VAIL, Colo.-

President Bush signed a bill Wednesday renaming the post office in this ski resort town after former President Ford, who owned a home in nearby Beaver Creek.

Ford, who died Dec. 26 at age 93, developed a love for the Vail Valley during a Christmas vacation in the 1960s, and he visited regularly for years after.

He made Vail his Western White House, and town leaders dubbed him their “First Citizen.” Ford established a home in Beaver Creek after he left office.

“When Gerald Ford made Colorado his home, he honored our state by sharing his wisdom and experience,” said Sen. Ken Salazar said.

The post office is now officially called the Gerald R. Ford Jr. Post Office Building.
