Hanna Zavecz scored 21 points and Justyna Podziemska added 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as Wyoming never trailed in beating Missouri 73-67 on Sunday in the second round of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament in Laramie.
Missouri (17-14) went on a 9-0 run in the last 3 1/2 minutes, closing within 67-64 when Alyssa Hollins hit a 3-pointer with 1:22 left, but couldn’t get any closer.
Wyoming (23-9) will host Oregon in the third round; the Ducks had a first-round bye, then beat Cal-Santa Barbara 70-54 on Saturday.
Podziemska hit four 3-pointers in the first half, when the Cowgirls twice built double-figure leads. Wyoming opened the game with a 10-0 run, capped by Podziemska’s second 3-pointer with 15:45 left in the half.
The Cowgirls have the third-most wins in school history and the most since finishing 24-8 in 1990.
Quick-strike Thunder rocks Rage in CHL
The Wichita Thunder of the Central Hockey League jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first period and defeated the visiting Rocky Mountain Rage 5-2 at the Kansas Coliseum. The Thunder outshot the Rage 18-9 in the first period as Daniel Tetrault scored at 12:15 and Jason Duda got a goal at 12:26. They were the quickest two goals the Rage has allowed this season.
The Youngstown Steelhounds got a game-winning goal by Chris Richards with 4:39 remaining to defeat the visiting Colorado Eagles 3-2.
