Changes will be made after all to Ken Burns’ massive documentary “The War” to include contributions made by Latinos and Native Americans during World War II.
PBS, which will air the seven-part documentary in September, announced today that it has reached an agreement with Defend the Honor, a coalition of Latino groups, to integrate into the series additional narratives about Latino and Native Americans during the war.
It is a reversal by PBS, which said when Latino groups first protested the show’s content in early February that the 14-hour documentary was complete and no changes could made.
“PBS, Ken Burns and his co-director/producer Lynn Novick have decided to create additional content that focuses on stories of Latino and Native American veterans of the Second World War,” PBS president and CEO Paula Kerger said in a statement released today. In addition, a Latino producer will consult with PBS on additional content.
“The War” is Burns’ documentary that focuses on the war’s effect on residents in four American cities. It debuts on Sept. 23.
