Julep: JOO-lip, English. The word comes from “julab,” the Persian word for rose water, and can also mean a sweet syrup made for taking medicine. Invented around 1800, the mint julep is made from mint, sugar, bourbon and water, and is popular in the South. More than 80,000 of the drinks are served at Churchill Downs during the Kentucky Derby, using 1,000 pounds of mint and 60,000 pounds of ice. | Kristen Browning-Blas
