FORT CARSON, Colo.-

A soldier relaxing at Womack Reservoir at Fort Carson drowned after a flotation device broke apart, officials said Tuesday.

Staff Sgt. Willie Roberts, 34, was on a device supported by pontoons under a chair when the pontoons separated and the chair went underwater Saturday. Roberts tried swimming back to the dock but didn’t make it.

He was at reservoir with friends and three of his five children, post spokeswoman Karen Linne said.

Roberts, of Philadelphia, was assigned to the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.
