VAIL, Colo.-
The U.S. Ski & Snowboard Association is pushing Vail Valley to host the 2013 World Alpine Ski Championships.
The Vail Valley Foundation, which hosted the 1989 and 1999 World Alpine Championships, was unsuccessful in its most recent World Championships attempt, a plan that called for Vail and Beaver Creek to serve as the sites of a unique triple 2009 bid that would have included Alpine, Freestyle and Snowboard Championships. The foundation didn’t bid for the 2011 championships.
“Our board of directors feels strongly that this valley needs to continue to be at the forefront of international athletic competition,” Ceil Folz, president of the Vail Valley Foundation, said in a statement. “We all feel that now is the right time to get back into the World Championships game.”
This year’s championships were held in Are, Sweden.
Other potential sites for 2013 are Schladming, Austria; St. Moritz, Switzerland; and Cortina, Italy. The site will be determined next May at the FIS Congress in Cape Town, South Africa.
