Steamworks Brewing Colorado Kölsch, $3.99 for 22-ounce bottle
“Light” doesn’t have to mean a fizzy beer with little more taste than water.
Kölsch, akin to a pilsner, is a light-tasting ale that, in Germany, may be produced only in the city of Cologne. But it’s an easy-drinking style that also has caught on with American brewers, including Steamworks Brewing, a 10-year-old micro in Durango.
Steamworks’ version, unlike its German ancestors, is filtered, making it clear and about the color of Coors. The difference is in the taste, which, while subtle, is nicely rounded with just a hint of sweetness and hops.
A welcome summer refresher.
