DENVER-

A judge denied bond Wednesday for a man and a woman arrested in the death of a 7-year-old boy who police said appeared to have been starved.

Jon Phillips, 26, and Sarah Berry, 21, were also advised that they could be charged with first-degree murder and child abuse resulting in death.

The coroner’s office identified the boy as Chandler Grafner. Denver’s human services department, which is helping in the investigation, and police have declined to release additional details about the relationship between the boy and the two adults arrested in his death.

He died Sunday, about 45 minutes after arriving at an Englewood hospital. Police responded to a call that afternoon about a boy in cardiac arrest, saying he appeared malnourished.

Media reports quote family members as saying Phillips was the biological father of one of the two boys living in the house.

A younger boy was taken from the home and placed in foster care, humans services officials said.

Berry’s father, Delynn Berry, told the Rocky Mountain News that Grafner and another sibling were recently removed from their biological mother’s home.

Police spokeswoman Virginia Quinones declined to comment on that report.
