PUEBLO, Colo.-

Cheyenne Mountain will end a five-year run of runner-up finishes and win the Class 4A girls state tennis title after advancing players Friday in six of the tournament’s seven categories.

After semifinals’ play Cheyenne Mountain’s 66 points gave them an insurmountable lead over Greeley West, which had 46 points. Even if Cheyenne Mountain went home and Greeley West won all of its matches, the most the Spartans could score would be 59 points.

Cheyenne Mountain has now won 13 girls state championships and it has placed no worse than third since 1984. Overall, this is the 26th state tennis championship for Cheyenne Mountain. The boys tennis program also have won 13 state crowns, including two in a row.

Cheyenne Mountain coach Dave Adams is in his first season coaching Cheyenne’s girls tennis squad, but he has been the head of the boys program since 1987.
