Residents in a downtown neighborhood where a woman was shot by police late Saturday say they do not believe she lived in the area.

The woman was shot near 29th and Lawrence streets about 9 p.m. Saturday after a dispute. Police said that the woman had been brandishing a knife and that she received a single torso wound from the officer’s gun.

Neighborhood residents said they believe the woman may have been looking for someone.

Denver police spokesman John White said Sunday that the woman who was shot has survived. He declined to release her name or condition or any other details about the shooting investigation.

Resident Betty Guss, 55, said she thought firecrackers had gone off at the time of the shooting.

“It was a real big boom,” she said.

Another area resident, Jai Singleton, said, “The whole street looked like a crime scene” with a heavy police presence. She and other neighbors questioned why police didn’t have an alternate response, like using pepper spray or a Taser.
