DENVER-
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission said Thursday it has reached a $450,000 settlement in a lawsuit alleging a Colorado Springs company maintained a work environment hostile to Hispanics, Asians and blacks.
The company, Professional Transit Management doing business as Springs Transit, also agreed to hold anti-discrimination training programs for employees, the EEOC said.
A telephone message left for an attorney representing the company was not returned.
The lawsuit, filed last year, alleged company supervisors used ethnic slurs targeting blacks, Hispanics and Asians and that threats of violence were made against minorities.
The EEOC said one worker who was not identified once commented it should not be against the law to shoot Mexicans, blacks or “Chinese people.” Supervisors did nothing to stop the comments, the agency said.
“The egregiousness of the threats, and racial and national origin harassment in this case is stunning,” EEOC attorney Nancy Weeks of Denver said in a statement. “We are pleased that the minority employees at Springs Transit have been compensated in some way for the terrible treatment they endured.”
