Lakewood – One of the standouts today at the Class 5A track and field state championships was Overland sophomore Jeremy Rankin, a national sprint champion. His time of 10.32 seconds in the 100-meter dash established a new all-time state record and equaled the fastest prep time in the nation this season.
Ranking beat out a fast field that included runner-up Terrence McGaughy of George Washington.
“It was great to do this for my coaches and teammates, as well as my family,” Rankin said. “I ran a 10.33 earlier in the year, so I thought this time would be even faster. But I’ll take it.”
Rankin was the favorite in the 200 and looked to be neck-and-neck with Dominick Roberts of East rounding the final curve. But Roberts kicked in the afterburners down the stretch for a winning time of 21.14.
“I thought I had it,” said Rankin, who made up for it by helping Overland win the 400 relay.
