DENVER-

Andy Burns hit his third homer in two days and freshman Marco Gonzales was impressive on the mound as Rocky Mountain won its first state baseball championship with a 12-2 victory over Wheat Ridge in the Class 5A title game.

The game ended after six innings due to the 10-run mercy rule in high school.

The Rocky Mountain Lobos (20-5), the No. 8 seed, handed third-seeded Wheat Ridge (21-4) its second loss of the double-elimination tournament. The Lobos, from Fort Collins, beat the Farmers 11-2 on May 12.

Gonzales, who retired the first 10 batters he faced, earned the victory, allowing two runs on seven hits, no walks and five strikeouts in six innings.

Beau Stevens took the loss. He allowed five runs on eight hits and five walks and three strikeouts in 3 2-3 innings.

Burns, who homered twice Friday in the Lobos’ 12-4 victory over Air Academy, hit a solo shot over left-center field in the third inning to give Rocky Mountain a 2-0 lead.

He then hit an RBI-single in the fourth and scored a run, giving the Lobos a 5-0 advantage.

The junior shortstop finished with three runs, two walks and two RBIs.

Wheat Ridge countered with a pair of runs in the fifth when Cameron Brown hit a two-run homer to briefly ignite the Farmers bench.

Rocky Mountain broke the game open in the bottom of the inning, scoring five runs with two outs to take a 10-2 lead.

The Lobos ended the game in the sixth when Bryan Peters hit his second run-scoring double in as many innings.
