DENVER-
Investigators said they believe firebombs set off under seven sport-utility vehicles in March are the same type of device that animal activists used against meat trucks in the Netherlands.
Grant Barnes, 24, faces charges of using explosives to commit a felony and other counts. Investigators accused him of placing firebombs under SUVs in Denver’s upscale Cherry Creek neighborhood over four days. No one was hurt.
Authorities said they found seven other devices in Barnes’ car along with a computer.
Denver fire investigator Leif Skulborstad said city and federal authorities had never seen such devices before but found instructions on how to build identical devices on an Internet site run by the Animal Liberation Front, The Denver Post reported Tuesday.
Investigators requested a warrant to search the computer, saying they wanted to see what Web sites Barnes had visited and to see if he had worked with any organizations.
It was not immediately known if a warrant had been issued or a search had been conducted.
The search warrant affidavit said the devices used in Denver were made with materials identical to those used by the European Animal Liberation Front in the Netherlands.
Barnes’ lawyer, Phil Cherner, declined comment Tuesday.
