LARAMIE, Wyo.-
Sean Ogirri, a standout basketball player at Wichita State University, is transferring to the University of Wyoming.
Ogirri, a 6-2 guard, will sit out next season under the NCAA transfer rule and will have one season of eligibility with the Cowboys after that. He was Colorado High School Player of the Year at Denver East and finished this season as third-leading scorer at Wichita State with 9.5 points and 2.7 rebounds per game.
“We’re excited about Sean,” Cowboy head coach Heath Schroyer said Tuesday. “He is a tremendous player who can come in here and have success. He brings to our program the experience of playing at a high level at Wichita State. He has made big shots in big games, including the NCAA tournament.”
Schroyer said he expects Ogirri will have an impact on the Cowboys in the coming year by participating in practice sessions.
“We are not going to make it a habit to take one-year guys,” Schroyer said. “But we are committed to recruiting the best players, especially along the front range. We want to balance the short term with our long-term goals. Having a player of his caliber in our program, even though for just a short time, is an opportunity we could not let pass.”
Wichita State, in Kansas, granted a release to Ogirri and two new recruits this month following coach Mark Turgeon’s departure for Texas A&M.
