Fort Collins – Rescuers recovered the body of a teen who drowned Friday at a city natural areas pond where swimming was prohibited.

The victim’s friends told firefighters the teen had tried to swim across the pond when he went under around 2 p.m., Larimer County sheriff’s officials said.

His body was found about 2 1/2 hours later.

Coroner’s officials said family members at the scene identified the victim as Javier Hernandez, 17, of Platteville.

An autopsy was scheduled for Saturday.
