BOULDER
Commissioner Mayer dies at 56 of cancer
Boulder County Commissioner Tom Mayer has lost his fight against a rare form of cancer.
Mayer, 56, died Friday evening at the University of Colorado Hospital in Aurora. Mayer was diagnosed in November with adenocarcinoma/carcinoid in his colon and appendix. He announced in January that he would have to spend some time away from his job to receive treatment but said he intended to return.
“If you knew Tom, you knew how big his heart was and the depth of compassion he felt for the people of Boulder County,” Commissioner Ben Pearlman said in a statement.
Pearlman said Mayer was interested in environmental and land-use issues in the county. But he was particularly devoted to improving the lives of the young and the poor, Boulder County officials said.
Boulder’s Democratic Party will appoint Mayer’s successor. Mayer’s family is planning a public memorial service in mid-July.

GLENWOOD SPRINGS
2 accused of feeding bear may avoid fine
The state Division of Wildlife was leaning against citing people suspected of petting and illegally feeding a bear that wildlife officers destroyed.
Division officials decided to kill the bear Thursday because they feared it had become too used to humans at a campground in West Glenwood and might attack someone who didn’t reward it with food.
Wildlife officials said a couple at the campground may have been catching fish and throwing them to the bear.
“Our full intent was to charge them. Our problem there is we did not see them do it. The other issue there is they probably couldn’t even pay the fine,” wildlife manager Perry Will said.
The penalty is $68 for violating the prohibition against feeding wildlife.
A witness reported the bear was fed by humans. Wildlife officials said the couple admitted only to petting the female bear.
