GOLDEN, Colo.—Fifty-three inmates, including one who remained hospitalized Monday, were sickened by a gastrointestinal illness that swept through the Jefferson County Jail over the weekend.
Officials were investigating the cause of the illness, which began sickening inmates on Friday.
“We have an inkling, but we don’t have a definite diagnosis,” said Dr. Mark Johnson, executive director of Jefferson County Public Health and Environment. “We’re leaning toward foodborne illness, based on the symptoms.”
Sickened inmates who have been quarantined are being treated with liquids, medication and some with intravenous fluids.
