Four Denver County sheriff’s deputies apprehended a man who authorities said stabbed a 22-year-old woman with an ice pick outside the City and County Building on Monday afternoon.

The victim, whose name was not released, was taken to Denver Health Medical Center. She was stabbed in the back of her neck, but information about her injuries was not available.

Charles Smith, 48, was arrested, said Denver County sheriff’s Sgt. Frank Gale.

The attack was described as random because the victim and Smith do not know each other, Gale said.

Gale said Smith was never in the City and County Building but walked across the street toward the woman, who was standing with other people.

Deputies Eric Rosenfeldt and Andrew Cross arrested Smith at gunpoint, and he surrendered without a struggle, according to a news release.

Deputies Jose Colunga and Roger Cline treated the victim until paramedics arrived.

Colorado Bureau of Investigation records show Smith has an arrest record dating back to 1996 for loitering, possession of dangerous drugs, assault, trespassing and larceny.
