Firefighters doused burning bales of paper and cardboard at a Denver recycling plant Friday after about eight-and-a-half hours of pouring water on the smoldering piles.
“We literally had to go in and rip apart these bales,” said Heather Green, spokeswoman for the Denver Fire Department.
Firefighters began battling the blaze outside Waste Management’s recycling plant at 3800 E. 48th Ave. at about noon. The last firefighters left the scene shortly after 8:30 p.m., Green said.
At its peak, 75 firefighters using 14 trucks and engines were on the scene. Firefighters tore apart hundreds of bales to ensure that none were still smoldering.
No one was injured and damage was confined to spaces outside the building.
