CHICAGO—Ten days into its first pilot recruitment drive since 2001, United Airlines says that more than 1,000 pilots have applied for 100 jobs with the carrier.

The Chicago-based airline announced last month that it would hire new pilots and bring back the remaining pilots that have been on furlough.

Airline officials say the new hires could begin their training in Denver as soon as October and could be flying by the end of the year.

United, which is owned by UAL Corp., is adding additional pilots to accommodate a growing flight schedule and an increase in the number of international destinations.
