Aurora – A 2-year-old boy was critically injured when he was hit by a pickup Thursday night, and police say the motorist is being investigated for drunken driving.

The incident happened about 9 p.m. at East Kentucky Avenue and South Waco Street, said Aurora police Lt. Troy Edwards, who was the first officer to respond to the scene.

Edwards said that when he pulled up, a large group of people had surrounded the little boy, who had been thrown about 10 feet by the impact of the pickup, and an unidentified woman was performing CPR on the child.

The boy, whose name was unavailable, was rushed to The Children’s Hospital in life-threatening condition, Edwards said.

“He was in really bad shape when I saw him,” Edwards said. “I didn’t think he was going to make it from what I saw.”

Police said the boy was following his father across Kentucky Avenue when an eastbound Mazda pickup sideswiped the child. The father believed his son was back at his house with the boy’s aunt and didn’t know he was following him, Edwards said.

The driver’s name was unavailable.

“Looking at the scene, I didn’t see any skid marks,” Edwards said. “I don’t know if he even saw the boy until after he hit him. He did pull over, though, and was very concerned.”

During the driver’s interview with police, officers noticed an odor of alcohol and the driver disclosed that he had been drinking that night. The driver will undergo a blood test and may be released later or arrested, depending on the outcome of the tests and the boy’s survival, Edwards said.
