STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo.—A Routt County sheriff’s deputy mistaken for a suspected police impersonator has been fired for violating his department’s conduct policy, sheriff’s officials said.
Mitchell Bachmann, 23, will not face criminal charges, Sheriff’s Office Investigator Ken Klinger said Tuesday. Bachmann was fired Monday.
Bachmann was accused of approaching an 18-year-old woman at a Fort Collins convenience store Aug. 12, asking her personal questions and for directions to a nightclub, and then asking her to get into his vehicle. Bachmann was off-duty but was wearing a T-shirt with the word “sheriff” on it.
The woman reported the case to Larimer County sheriff’s officials, who investigated it as a possible case of impersonating a police officer. They dropped the case after Bachmann was identified as a law-enforcement officer.
Bachmann doesn’t have a listed phone number and could not be reached for comment.
Sheriff’s employees are discouraged from wearing their work uniforms or apparel when off-duty, Klinger said.
