COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.—Lightning struck and killed a 21-year-old man who had taken cover inside a tent.

The man, whose name wasn’t released, was with three other hikers when the lightning struck at about 7 p.m. Saturday, said Steve Sperry, spokesman for El Paso County Search and Rescue.

Sperry said the group was hiking on a trail near St. Peter’s Dome along Old Stage Road, about five miles west of the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs.

El Paso County Sheriff’s Sgt. Jeannette Whitney said Sunday that the man was pronounced dead at the scene. She said the two women and man with him weren’t harmed.

One of the hikers ran down the mountain for help. Members of the search and rescue team carried the man’s body down the trail.
