GRAND FORKS, N.D.—University of North Dakota head hockey coach Dave Hakstol has a new five-year contract that puts his base salary at $210,000 a year with incentives for him and his assistants, UND officials announced Wednesday.
The contract includes incentives for Hakstol of up to 25 percent of the base, and incentives for associate head coach Cary Eades and assistant coach Dane Jackson. The incentives are for such goals was reaching the Frozen Four, UND said.
Hakstol’s contract also includes $50,000 annually in deferred compensation, and $190,000 he can split among his coaching staff. The staff can earn up to 25 percent of that figure in incentives if they and the team meet certain goals.
Hakstol, Eades and Jackson are former UND players. Hakstol has been the UND head coach since July 2004.
Phil Harmeson, a UND vice president, said the contract, which runs through 2012, makes the coaching staff’s salaries competitive with the country’s leading college hockey programs. Hockey supporters were willing to help finance part of the salaries, he said.
UND currently has a NCAA Division I program for men’s and women’s hockey and is in the process of moving other sports from Division II to Division I.
“This action solidifies the nationally recognized Division I program we’ve had in place for several decades and provides a solid foundation for the future,” Harmeson said in the UND statement.
Hakstol said the multiyear contract provides stability for the staff and “the opportunity to continue to work together in what we consider the best place in hockey.”
