GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo.—With the oil and gas drilling boom already making traffic in some parts of Western Colorado look like the Front Range, more leases will be offered in November.

Meanwhile, U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard wants the federal government to assign two staffers to work just on the oil development plan for the Roan Plateau. He said that will speed up work because there is so much debate over what it will mean for wildlife in the area.

Record numbers of permits have been issued in Western Colorado, and local governments are saying it is straining their resources to keep up with it. Motels and hotels are full, competing with tourism and other industries who need seasonal workers.
