A Steamboat Springs woman is under arrest on suspicion of killing her 1-year-old daughter.

The homicide is Steamboat’s first since the spring of 2000, said the city’s public safety director, J.D. Hays.

Hays said officers went to 33-year-old Luz Devina Cisneros’ apartment Thursday morning. Inside, Hays said they found Cisneros’ daughter, Briana Simon, unconscious and Cisneros injured. Both were taken to the hospital, where Briana, whose first birthday was about two weeks ago, died. Cisneros was treated at the hospital and then taken to the Routt County Jail.

Hays refused to provide additional details on the case, and a judge has sealed public records in the investigation.

Authorities say Cisneros was treated for a self-inflicted neck injury. They would not say what kind of weapon had caused her injuries or her child’s.

Police went to the apartment after Briana’s father, Simon Urrutia, reported that Cisneros was threatening to hurt the infant and herself.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
