A previously cancelled debate between Boulder City Council candidates was reinstated under a deal announced Monday.

The city initially planned to charge the league $850 to air the forum, then agreed to waive that fee if the league would not take a position on ballot initiatives, in addition to not endorsing candidates. The league balked at that condition and canceled the forum.

Under the new deal, the league won’t take a position on any ballot issues except the charter amendment to raise the pay for future councilmembers from $679 a month to $1,000 monthly.

“We wanted to find a format that preserves this long standing tradition, yet honors my obligation to keep the city in a neutral position,” Boulder City Manager Frank Bruno said in a joint statement.

League President Sue Anderson said, “The league will continue its commitment to analyzing public policy issues and advocating for good government. This format does nothing to harm that goal.”

The forum will air on Boulder’s Municipal Channel 8 regularly until the Nov. 6 election, following the live taping in the City Council chambers on Oct. 13.

The forum will also be available at .
