Denver trails only Baltimore among NFL markets in terms of tailgating atmosphere, according to a new study co-sponsored by DirecTV, the satellite-TV company with exclusive rights to the NFL Sunday Ticket.

“Denver received points for the pro-tailgating environment, facilities, expanded parking hours and overall tailgating fan enthusiasm at Invesco Field,” the study states.

A group of so-called tailgating experts made visits to every NFL and most college stadiums. The study rates the “tailgating friendliness” of the 31 cities that have an NFL team, along with NFL-hopeful Los Angeles. Other notes from the study:

  •  Rounding out the top 10 were Houston, San Diego, Cincinnati, Miami, Tampa, Kansas City, Buffalo, Philadelphia and Phoenix (tied for 10th).
  •  Ongoing construction of the Meadowlands Xanadu and Patriots Place projects limited the scores of New York and Boston, which tied for 18th place.
  •  Parking or tailgating restrictions in Green Bay, Chicago and Seattle severely affected the tailgating scores of those cities.
