Washington — The top American commander in Iraq needs to tell Congress what comes after the military surge and how he defines success in the ongoing Iraq war, Rep. Mark Udall said today.

Udall, D-Eldorado Springs, sits in a hearing today where Gen. David Petraeus and Iraq Ambassador Ryan Crocker will answer questions from lawmakers.

“The message out of this hearing is Mr. President there’s no strategy” currently in the Iraq war, Udall said during a conference call with reporters. “The only solution’s a political solution.”

Udall said he still believes Congress will eventually adopt a bill he is sponsoring in the House, that will make the recommendations of the Iraq Study Group law. Sen. Ken Salazar, D-Colo., sponsors that in the Senate. Asked about how that bill is proceeding, Udall indicated there is no measurable progress on that legislation right now.
