Aaron Abel’s 33-yard field goal capped a late comeback as Colorado Mines topped Adams State 10-7 in the fourth quarter at Rex Stadium in Alamosa.
Adams State (0-4) got on the scoreboard first when Josh Salazar scored on a 2-yard run. Colorado Mines (1-2) then had two unanswered scores – a 15-yard pass from David Pesek to Adam Saur and Abel’s field goal with 2:18 remaining – to open the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference schedule with a win.
J.T. Baum rushed for a game-high 105 yards on 17 carries for Mines. Billy Lundquist led Adams with 221 yards on 16-of-35 passing, and the Grizzlies are 0-4 for the first time since 2001.
Mines will host Chadron State on Saturday at Brooks Field in Golden. Chadron running back Danny Woodhead is 448 yards shy of the all-time, all-division NCAA rushing record. His 6,906 career rushing yards rank fourth.
MESA STATE 24, WESTERN N.M. 10 at Grand Junction – Mesa State had three players rush for touchdowns as the Mavericks outgained visiting Western New Mexico on the ground 111-31 at Stocker Stadium. Mesa State (3-0, 1-0), ranked No. 6 in the nine-team RMAC preseason poll, moved atop the conference standings. Chadron State (3-0, 0-0) is the only other undefeated team.
Seth Lewis’ 1-yard scoring run with 4:35 remaining in the first half capped a 55-yard, 10-play drive and gave Mesa a 14-0 lead.
NEB.-KEARNEY 61, FORT LEWIS 0 at Kearney, Neb. – Nebraska-Kearney scored on five of its first six possessions and finished with 360 yards rushing – its highest total since 1966 – as the Lopers (2-1) routed Fort Lewis (0-2) at Foster Field. Behind Jake Richards’ 147 yards rushing on 21 carries, Kearney outgained Fort Lewis 577-166. The Lopers led 33-0 at halftime.
N.M. HIGHLANDS 35, WESTERN ST. 18 at Gunnison – Alex Aispuro’s two TD passes in the third quarter lifted New Mexico Highlands to the victory over Western State at the Mountaineer Bowl. Aispuro’s 15-yard TD pass to Daniel White erased a 10-7 second-half deficit. Defensive lineman Percy Robinson came in for a play at running back and scored from 1 yard, and Aispuro later found LaFerrell Payne in the end zone from 8 yards.
Tyler Robertson had a 53-yard TD pass to Shaun Suttorp as Western State (0-3) tried to rally. The teams combined for 859 yards of offense as Highlands improved to 2-1.
COLORADO COLLEGE 36, SEWANEE 26 at Colorado Springs – Jon McDonald threw for 310 yards and two touchdowns on 25-of-31 passing to lead Colorado College over Sewanee (Tenn.) in a Division III game at Washburn Field.
