It’s Shine-time. The much ballyhooed premiere issue of Shine magazine is set to launch Oct. 5 with a party for 500 at the X Jet hanger at Centennial Airport.

“I’ve been in magazine hell for a couple of weeks. Finishing up production, all-nighter stuff,” publisher Zac Folk said Wednesday.

He said he’s “proud and incredibly happy” with the 176-page glossy. And he’s proud of the cover, which features a picture of George Clooney.

What does Clooney have to do with Denver, except recently making a movie from Denver writer Rick Reilly’s screenplay “Leatherheads”?

“He has connections here and with the rest of Colorado,” Folk explained. “And he epitomizes the ultimate in luxury in Colorado.”

The road to Shine’s debut has been a little rocky. Startup editor Dahlia Jean Weinstein left the operation in August. Folk had to change printers late in the game. The pub date was pushed back. And there is always the issue of paying writers – which Folk admits was a problem in his last venture, Bloom magazine. “It’s not an issue with Shine,” he said. “We’re fully funded, and it won’t become an issue.”

Look for a lifestyle column in Shine from social star Holly Kylberg. Folk killed a story she first wrote for the glossy about “cougars” (older women who chase younger men) and their tactics. Sorry we’ll miss out on that saga.

It’s raining Pythons

We told you last week that Monty Python’s Eric Idle is coming to town on Tuesday to see “Spamalot,” which he wrote, and to take his daughter to look at some area colleges.

Now comes word that Monty Python’s Terry Jones is also coming to Colorado. He’ll be at the University of Colorado’s Conference on World Affairs 7 p.m. Sunday for a free screening of “The Life of Brian” at Muenzinger Auditorium, followed by a Q&A with Jones. A rare treat for Python nuts.

If Idle bumps into Jones, let’s hope they fall into their famous “Nudge Nudge” sketch.

Showtime

The Denver Press Club’s annual Gridiron Show – billed as “a nonstop night of skewing politics and popular culture” – is skedded for Oct. 14.

Among the topics to laugh at: TB patient Andrew Speaker and a song for Sen. Larry Craig, “Tap Three Times.”

Mayor John Hickenlooper and his staff head up the cast at the Seawell Ballroom. Also showing us their acting and singing chops: Ch. 7’s Mike Landess, former Councilwoman Rosemary Rodriguez, PBS’s Cynthia Hessin, state House Speaker Andrew Romanoff, state Sen. Shawn Mitchell and Denver Biz Journal’s Bruce Goldberg.

Pretty good lineup. Now they have to be funny! For tix, call 303-571-5260.

City spirit

Former Denver itemizer Norm Clarke, now doing it large for the Las Vegas Review-Journal, is in town for Friday night’s Celebrity Waiter Dinner at Elway’s – and he’ll speak at lunch Friday at the Press Club … Sez who: “I love to sleep. It’s the best of both worlds. You get to be alive, and unconscious.” Rita Rudner
