Windsor – Prosecutors will release the name of the Windsor police officer shot several times Saturday while investigating the theft of candy and details surrounding the death of the suspect, who was found dead in his apartment after he exchanged gunfire with police.
The officer was reported in good condition Sunday at the Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland.
The Weld County district attorney’s office said Sunday that a news conference is not planned, but that the information will be issued in a press release Monday.
The identity of the suspect, believed to be 67 or 68 years old, hasn’t been released. The incident began about 1:45 p.m. Saturday when two officers were sent to the man’s apartment on a complaint that he had stolen $25 worth of candy from a nearby Safeway.
According to police, the suspect opened his door, opened fire and hit the first officer. A second officer returned fire, though it was unknown whether the man was hit. The suspect retreated into the apartment. Two hours later, a robotic camera was sent to the apartment and the suspect’s body was found.
