DENVER—A passenger in a sport utility vehicle died after a colliding with a Denver police car, police said Monday.

The accident happened at about 11:30 p.m. Sunday as a police officer was responding to a call to backup another police officer, spokesman Sonny Jackson said. The patrol car, which had its lights and siren on, collided with an Isuzu Rodeo traveling west on 17th Avenue as it cross the road at Syracuse Street, he said.

The officer’s car ended up in a nearby yard and the Rodeo hit the curb, rolled on its side, ejecting the passenger. Police said the injuries to the Rodeo driver and the officer weren’t life threatening.

The accident is being investigated jointly by the department’s traffic investigations unit and the district attorney’s office. The department’s independent monitor, Richard Rosenthal, will monitor the investigation, police said.
