BOULDER, Colo.—Cherry Creek wrapped up its 34th state tennis title in 36 years Friday, amassing an insurmountable lead and sending players to the finals in six of the seven brackets.
Rocky Mountain’s Will Vasos eliminated Cherry Creek’s entry in the No. 1 singles by beating Any Benson 6-3, 6-3. He’ll face Fairview’s Calix Van Lier who beat Durango’s Geoff Lewis 2-6, 6-4, 6-1 to advance to Saturday’s finals.
Fairview was in second place with 47 points, while Rocky Mountain enters the final rounds in third, with 36.
Though Rocky Mountain is eliminated from the team title contention, players Casey MacMaster and Greg Wilson face Cherry Creek players in the No. 2 and No. 3 singles, respectively.
“The one thing you have to remember is that every team is a different group of boys,” Cherry Creek coach Kirk Price said of his program’s dominance. “Every time you come here, there is all the history. But it is these boys’ time.
