A bridge north of Fort Morgan has been shut to heavy-truck traffic by highway officials for safety reasons.

The Colorado Department of Transportation said today that it took the measure because of “structural concerns” about the bridge, on Colorado 52 between Fort Morgan and Colorado 14. It is in need of replacement or major repairs,CDOT said.

Vehicles that cannot cross the bridge are:

  •  Six tons in gross weight for a straight truck.
  •  Seven tons in gross weight for a tractor-trailer.

The bridge, over Wildcat Creek, was built in 1934 and serves traffic through Weld and Morgan counties.

Just 11 bridges among CDOT’s 3,757 statewide have such a restriction — which is just short of a complete closure.

State transportation officials are exploring options but have not finalized plans at this time. Drivers in heavy vehicles should use Colorado 71 as an alternate route.
