The Starz Denver Film Festival opens tonight, celebrating 30 years of bringing flicks to Denver.
Shutterbug Larry Laszlo was there from Day One – taking pictures of the stars and the moviegoers. Almost 300 images of the festival are in the book “Take 30.” It’s a document not only of the movies and bold names that have passed through town, but of what Denver and its people look like in the background.
“I have lots of favorites,” says Laszlo. “Some are favorites because they were hard to get. Some are just really cool shots.”
Laszlo had thousands upon thousands of images to pick from. And not every interesting picture is in the book. “We didn’t want to let all the skeletons out of the closet,” says Laszlo.
Like stars in the hot tub after hours.
Two iconic pictures in the book will catch your eye. Bill Murray walking into the Paramount Theatre for the opening of his movie “The Razor’s Edge” in 1984. The crowd is shooting pictures of the star with cameras as big as their heads.
Then there’s Tim Robbins walking into the Buell Theatre last year to receive the John Cassavetes Award, the crowd snapping pics of him with their Canon ELPHs and cellphones.
Other famous visitors captured by Laszlo include: Harry Dean Stanton, Alan Alda, Lillian Gish, Yvette Mimieux, Anthony Quinn, Malcolm McDowell, Mary Steenburgen, Beau Bridges, Edward James Olmos, Steve Martin, Dennis Hopper, Louis Gossett Jr., Jeff Goldblum, Steven Soderbergh, Michael Moore, John Sayles, Danny Glover, Tony Curtis, Jack Palance, Pam Grier, Nick Nolte, Ang Lee, William H. Macy, Jamie Foxx, Kevin Bacon, Kyra Sedgwick, Morgan Freeman, Francis Ford Coppola, Sean Penn, Peter Bogdanovich, Willie Nelson and so many, many more.
A photo exhibit of 80 of Laszlo’s shots are on display at Gallery 30, in the Starz FilmCenter, through Nov. 18. It’s very cool.
Here’s breaking news from the fest: Actress and former Coloradan Keri Russell (“Waitress”) will attend closing night, Nov. 17, for the screening of her new film, “August Rush,” in which she plays a cellist and mother of a musical prodigy.
