DENVER—A spokesman for Democratic Gov. Bill Ritter says Ritter’s campaign didn’t ask the Denver district attorney’s office to do political work last year.

GOP state Chairman Dick Wadhams suggested the DA’s office had checked a restricted government database at the request of Ritter’s campaign.

Ritter spokesman Evan Dreyer says no such request was made.

At issue is a campaign ad run by Ritter’s Republican opponent, Bob Beauprez. A federal immigration agent has been charged with improperly using the government database to get information that turned up in the ad.

The agent’s attorneys have said two other people accessed the database in the same general time period, including a someone in the Denver DA’s office.

Ritter is a former Denver DA but was out of office before he ran for governor.
