The Denver Rescue Mission needs an additional 4,000 frozen turkeys donated to feed the homeless and the poor at its annual Thanksgiving banquet.
The mission has collected 2,000 birds – far short of its 6,000-turkey goal, and the last day donations can be made is Wednesday.
Every year, the mission collects enough food to give 1,000 homeless people a Thanksgiving dinner the night before Thanksgiving as well as to distribute 1,250 food boxes to low-income families throughout the week of the holidays, spokeswoman Greta Walker said.
The mission also fills food requests from other agencies in the metro area that are feeding the homeless, which is why people should make donations as early as possible, Walker said.
After two food drives, the mission has collected over 300,000 pounds of food for this year’s holidays. About 552,000 meals at five locations were served last year.
Donations are accepted at Lawrence Street Shelter at 23rd and Lawrence streets, The Crossing at 6090 Smith Road, and the Ministry Outreach Center at 2501 E. 46th Ave.
