DENVER—Denver goalie Peter Mannino made 24 saves and Tyler Bozak’s power-play goal in the second period proved to be the game-winner as third-ranked Denver defeated North Dakota 1-0 in a Western Collegiate Hockey Association game on Friday.
Mannino was solid from the opening faceoff for the Pioneers (10-3-0, 7-2-0 WCHA).
Mannino preserved the win with a sprawling save against Chris VandeVelde with 23.6 seconds remaining. The play was contested by the Sioux but withstood a video replay.
Jean-Philippe Lamoureux had 27 saves for the eighth-ranked Fighting Sioux (6-5-1, 4-5-0). He had little chance to stop Bozak’s winning score in the second period. With Ryan Duncan in the penalty box for the Sioux, Chris Butler’s shot off the faceoff was deflected by Bozak past Lamoureux.
North Dakota had survived a series of power plays to escape a scoreless first period. But its luck ran out at 4:39 of the second.
