KENAI, Alaska—Agrium Inc. is closing its Kenai fertilizer plant, saying it can’t find sufficient natural gas used to make the material.
Company officials said 80 workers would lose their jobs on Thursday and 50 others would be laid off in coming months as the plant is mothballed.
The plant’s last shipment of 27,000 tons is destined for Korea.
Agrium USA’s parent, Agrium Inc., headquartered in Canada, announced in September it would close the Alaska complex.
Agrium announced Monday it would buy Greeley, Colo.-based UAP Holding Corp. for $2.65 billion in cash. UAP Holding is the parent of UAP Inc., a distributor of agricultural and non-crop products in the U.S. and Canada.
