Colorado’s 87th fall season, which began Aug. 9 with boys golfers practicing in short sleeves and finished Dec. 1 with football championships for the upper three classifications in front of people wearing parkas, again set the tone for the school year.

Nine sports — five involving females — ranged from contact to non-contact and individual to team, primarily contested in Colorado’s quick-changing elements for nearly four months over two holiday periods.

To commemorate another statewide performance, The Denver Post will present its annual Fall Best of the Best on Sunday.

For boys and girls cross country, field hockey, football, boys golf, gymnastics, boys soccer, softball, boys tennis and volleyball, there will be an assortment of All-Colorado honors, and first-team and honorable-mention all-state.

Also, look for players and coaches of the year by sport, the interesting individuals who dominated and oversaw the sports.

In addition, The Denver Post’s 57th Gold Helmet winner will be featured.

Since 1951, the unique combination of outstanding senior football player, scholar and citizen has been recognized and has included young men who have gone on to become businessmen, coaches, doctors, executives, fathers, lawyers, pro football players, pilots, scientists and teachers.

It is Colorado’s longest-running award for schoolboy athletes.

Also look for an open letter to the public from this year’s winner as well as updates on previous selectees.
